SWAR VISHVAM

A cooperative organised by world music percussionist Sandeep Raval with the aim of developing the world music concept in the true spirit of fusion, with a strong emphasis on the celebration of rhythm.

The music blends each performer's creative input both stylistically and in terms of the technical and expressive strengths of the musical disciplines represented. These include Indian music (folk, classical and film), jazz and western classical. The music is largely improvised, with each piece based on a loosely agreed framework.

All too often the world music approach stops at the blending of sounds while the techniques used to give each contributing style its character are ignored. Swar Vishvam is developing an approach where the rhythmic, phrasing and melodic characteristics of the different styles are freely and spontaneously interchangeable, performed by musicians well respected and established in their own fields. The lineup of Swar Vishvam is fluid, with anything from three to ten musicians performing. Some of the musicians who have recently performed with Swar Vishvam are legendary Indian percussionist Sivamani, James Asher (keyboards/percussion), Kiran Thakrar (keyboards), Pammi Saib (guitar) Jason Turner (tenor/soprano saxophones), Gunter Pasler (bass), Shaun (MC Censor) and Nikita (vocals), very recently Jonny Boston  (SAX), Chris Maccartney (Drum), Ivor Johnson (Bass), Rupesh Parihast ( Sarod), Kamlesh Sagthia ( side percussion), Shanon (Keyboard), Graham Roberts (Guitar), Aggie Demetri (Bouzouki) and Denise Gorden (Vocal), Unnati Dasgupta, Vijay Puri, Arvind Solanki, Iain Dunnet (keys), Danny Fox (Guitar), Kisha (Vocal), Arthur Hull (djembe/percussion), Lisa Mallet (Flute/Bansuri), Mahesh Vinayakram (Vocal), Pankaj Bhatt (Keyboards), Karsan Sagathia (Vocal), Paul McGrath (Piano, Arrangement -Writer)

Swar = Tone (should not be taken as the equivalent of note. A note is a fixed pitch, one which not possible to change.
Whereas Swar is comparable to tone which is more fluid and elusive.)

Vishvam: means "The Cosmos". (Vish + Vam means that which is pervaded exceptionally. Another meaning for Vishvam is Vaayu (air). Air is all pervading.)
